Nat Johnson is a Graduate Research Assistant at the National Center for Landscape Fire Analysis, College of Forestry and Conservation, University of Montana





Education:

  • B.A French, University of Massachusetts, 1991
  • Post-Baccalaureate studies at University of Montana 2001-2004
  • Graduate student in Forestry 2004 to present

Highlights:

  • Experience performing a variety of computer programming tasks using Python
  • Experience using ArcGIS, Imagine, Matlab, SPSS, and various database management systems 
  • 15 years of wildland fire suppression, prescribed fire, and fire technology support experience
  • Experience as a classroom wildland fire management instructor
  • Extensive work with wildland fire related Job Hazard Analyses
  • Worked with University of Montana's Wildlife Spatial Analysis Lab in conjunction with the USFS doing a remote sensing-based land-cover classification project

Leadership and Supervisory Skills:

  • Served as one of the NCLFA Fire Intelligence Module Crew Bosses for three seasons
  • Received performance award from USFS for outstanding leadership skills as Lolo IHC Squad Leader
  • Responsible for maintaining high level of situational awareness and firefighter/technical specialist cohesion in order to carry out safe and productive firefighting operations
  • Advanced to level of Task Force Leader in National Wildfire Coordinating Group's fire qualifications standards
