Jim serves in two primary roles within the Fire Center: Remote Sensing Program Manager and Fire Intelligence Module leader. Jim has been with the Fire Center since the inception of the organization and has worked in both in primary research and applications based projects. Jim's technical expertise is in remote sensing and related geospatial technologies. He has co-instructed various courses in digital image processing, geographic information systems, and remote sensing/air photo interpretation. Additionally, he has lectured in various professional seminars concerning remote sensing, global positioning systems, and GIS. Jim's research interests are diverse but can be categorized as being concerned with developing real-world applications for fire and natural resource management. Examples of these include the development and deployment of long-distance data and communications networks to enable data transfer and remote monitoring of wildland fires and applying appropriate geospatial and information technologies, such as field-going GIS, for enhanced management capability.
Jim has presented papers at various national and international conferences and continues to be active in a variety of professional organizations. Prior to his academic career, Jim has worked at the Intermountain Fire Science Laboratory, as a crew member on an Interagency hotshot crew, Forest Service engine crew, guide, and wrangler. His personal interests include photography, long motorcycle rides, skiing, and high latitudes.
