Applying innovative science and technology to on-the-ground natural resource management

View of the Conger Fire, Montana, 2007.

Located at The University of Montana, the NCLFA utilizes the research expertise of highly skilled graduate and undergraduate students, faculty from various disciplines, and collaborative research efforts with other academic and research institutions.Selway-Salmon WFU, 2005

The NCLFA's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program gives undergraduate students professional research experience. Students who participate in this workforce development program will engage in rigorous research projects, directed by NCLFA staff, with potential to publish and present research results. For more information on the UROP, contact Craig Comstock.

The NCLFA also leads a variety of national trainings on wildland fire and technology topics, including GIST training, WFSA training, S courses, NIROP courses, and more. Staff have presented their research findings at GIS conferences, the fire behavior and fuels conferences, and to other project partners.

In 2008, the NCLFA initiated a wintersession course at The University of Montana, the Prescribed Fire Practicum, for students in the College of Forestry and Conservation to learn about and practice ecological restoration burning. Read more about the Practicum.
