Fire Severity on the Rocky Mountain Ranger District, Biggs Flat Fire

Go Back

The Biggs Flat fire burned almost entirely within the bourndary of the 1988 Gates Park fire. The Center used multi-temporal 3-D image of Biggs Flat burn satellite images combined with field plot work to examine fire effects in re-burn areas of  the Bob Marshall3-D image of Biggs Flat Fire Wilderness Complex. In studying these unique, short-return period "nested" fires, we can begin to differentiate the effects fire return interval may have on current forest structure. The results of these studies will be used to assess how multiple prescribed fires or continued "nested" events may help restore ecosystems more adapted to higher frequency, lower intensity fires.
