In 2012, we released a beta of our first custom mobile application designed for managers and firefighters alike. It builds on three years of active research in mobile computing for wildland fire. This application is a fully, functioning weather calculation and archival system that allows multiple means of sharing data. The application moves fire behavior calculations from Appendix B of the Fireline Handbook to the digital realm and integrates those calculations with core operating system functionality to distribute observations and calculations through email, off-site cloud-based storage, near-field communications, and direct connections. This work is an example of how we are at the forefront of mobile development for wildland fire management.
