Fire and Fuels Science

Innovation in Fire Research and Applications

The FireCenter strives to create the nexus where basic fire science is investigated to build the tools for managers and produce the wildfire professional of tomorrow.

Baisc Fire Science is the science of understanding the phenomena of fire – focused on explaining fire as a process, on developing new or improved methods of characterization, and on building and validating new models. Basic fire science improves fire managers’ understanding of fire behavior and effects and helps researchers develop the applications and technology of tomorrow.

Applied Fire Science uses existing scientific knowledge to solve practical problems and to develop useful applications and technology. The best applied fire science is usually developed iteratively through strong partnerships between producers (scientists) and users (managers).
